Solventa to Develop Major Solar Energy Project at Monterrey International Airport

Solventa Energía is advancing a major solar energy project at Monterrey International Airport, supporting the integration of renewable electricity into one of the region’s key transportation facilities. The photovoltaic system has a capacity of 8.7 megawatts and incorporates more than 15,000 solar panels, contributing to the airport’s transition toward more efficient and sustainable energy use.

Solar Generation for Critical Infrastructure

The project combines renewable power generation with the engineering, monitoring and maintenance required for an airport environment. Integrating this infrastructure into a facility with continuous operations requires careful coordination to support energy performance while maintaining airport services.

Solventa’s first-phase project figures include 15,263 photovoltaic modules and estimated annual electricity savings of MX$12.5 million. These figures highlight the financial value of on-site generation alongside its environmental benefits, making energy management an operational priority as well as a sustainability initiative.

The solar installation forms part of a broader energy transition strategy announced by Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte (OMA), the airport’s operator. This strategy brings together renewable generation and battery storage to improve the way electricity is produced, managed and consumed within the airport.

Expanded Storage to Strengthen Energy Resilience

Alongside the solar project, OMA plans to increase the airport’s battery storage capacity from 9 to 49 megawatt-hours by adding 40 MWh. The expanded system will help manage electricity demand during peak periods and provide backup power for critical loads, supporting operational continuity.

Solar generation and storage serve complementary purposes. While photovoltaic panels produce electricity during daylight hours, batteries allow energy to be used more flexibly as demand changes. Together, these technologies can improve the airport’s control over its electricity consumption and support progress toward greater energy self-sufficiency.

Supporting Sustainable Airport Operations

The initiative is part of OMA and VINCI Airports’ wider environmental strategy, which also includes efficient lighting and air-conditioning systems. Solventa’s involvement illustrates the role of specialized energy providers in translating sustainability objectives into infrastructure adapted to the needs of major operating facilities.

For Monterrey, the project adds renewable energy capabilities to essential transportation infrastructure, connecting environmental goals with the reliability and efficiency needed to support the region’s business activity.
