ABB to Open New Switchboards Factory in Monterrey to Support Electrification Demand

Global technology leader ABB announced plans to open a new switchboards manufacturing facility in Monterrey as part of its long-term commitment to the region’s electrification ecosystem. The factory is expected to begin operations in Q4 2026, creating approximately 300 highly skilled jobs and strengthening Monterrey’s role as a key manufacturing hub for North America.

The new 21,739-square-meter plant will produce ReliaGearÂź switchboards, advanced electrical distribution solutions designed to deliver reliable power to critical infrastructure such as data centers, high-demand industrial facilities, hospitals, and airports. These systems play an essential role in modern electrification, particularly as digital infrastructure and energy-intensive industries continue to grow.

In announcing the project, RubĂ©n Caldera, Manufacturing Unit Manager for ABB, highlighted that electricity demand is rising faster than at any time in recent decades. He noted that the expansion of data centers, industrial activity, and the transition toward clean energy are driving increased need for secure, dependable electrical systems. “As our customers grow, we also grow,” Caldera said, stressing the importance of trained local talent to build the next generation of infrastructure technologies.

ABB has maintained a presence in Mexico for 70 years, expanding operations steadily over the last decade. The company currently operates four sites in Nuevo León, including three manufacturing facilities in Guadalupe and Apodaca and a regional commercial operations office in San Pedro Garza García serving North America. The new Monterrey factory will become ABB’s fifth location in the state and its fourth manufacturing site, reinforcing its strategic footprint in the region.

By adding production capacity for switchboards — critical components for delivering efficient, safe, and resilient power — ABB’s investment supports broader electrification efforts across multiple sectors. The new facility also aligns with global trends in digital transformation and infrastructure modernization, positioning Monterrey as a key destination for advanced industrial investment.
